How YOU can get involved
in the Federal election

There are a lot of different ways that an individual with a disability can play a role in making sure that disability issues and messages are heard in the federal election campaign. Here are just a few:

• Ask candidates about priority disability issues when they come to the door.
  
  
• Share the election information from this site with everyone.
  
  
• Encourage other people to raise disability issues with candidates.
  
  
• Be visible. Attend public meetings where election candidates are sharing their views.
  
  
• Raise disability issues at town hall meetings, debates and on call-in radio shows.
  
  
• Challenge candidates to make their campaign premises and information accessible.
  
  
• Write candidates and ask them their views on our priority disability issues.
  
  
• Send in submissions to the “Letters to the Editor” section of local newspapers raising disability issues and discussing Parties’ positions on these issues.
  
  
• Check with your local District Returning Officer to determine if your polling station is accessible.
  
  
• Check with parties in advance to obtain accessible transportation to polling stations and accessible child care.
  
  
• Help organizing an all-candidates meeting to discuss how they intend to work in support of persons with disabilities [for example, focus on the need for non-income tested disability-related supports programs/plans and strategies for inclusive employment measures].

Every candidate running in PEI in the January 23, 2006 federal election received a short survey of six questions to answer concerning their stands on disability issues on December 16, 2005 [or as soon after as their candidacy and contact information was known]. Their responses are each being posted on this web site shortly after they are recieved. If no response is given by a candidate, that is indicated as well.
